Thanks to Angela for this Frugal Baby Tip!
The trick I found to using a sling without padding is to spread the shoulder area out over the point of your shoulder... instead of letting it sit on your shoulder (where your bra strap would be). This makes it incredibly comfortable, as opposed to letting the shoulder part dig into the top of your shoulder :) I had almost given up on my sling until I lucked onto this tip.
BTW, I made a the sling I'm using.

I say---- way to go Angela
There are many great sling sites on the web. including directions to make many different kinds and even how to fashion a sling out of a simple piece of cloth (SPOC). there are soooooooo many benefits to slinging for both mother and baby.
There are also local groups (some are NINO- nine in nine out groups) where moms can share their knowledge and experience and newbies can learn from them. often they have different kinds of slings for show and tell and will let you try them so that you can find what's right for you. I found my local group through Yahoo Groups (just like this one).
I am a babywearing nana- second generation slinger and I have learned more from my daughter and grandchildren than I ever knew when I was a new mom and using a sling. I'm sooooo glad you didn't give up.
I suggest trying a mei tai style when your little one gets heavier, it's great for a back carry- like a piggyback ride with supports.
happy slinging
