Diapering_: Making Prefolds
Rate this post:Thanks to Michele for this Frugal Baby Tip!
I made my own prefolds with a pattern from Born to Love. If you can sew a straight line you can make these diapers. I used 'diaper flannel', that's how it was labeled at the fabric store. If I was in your position, I would check out my local fabric stores and ask them to show you the 'diaper flannel'. They will know what you mean.
If it's on sale, snatch it up. If not, wait a few weeks keeping an eye out for the sales. I was lucky that the first day I went to look it was on sale 1/2 price. It may pay to buy a membership at your fabric store if they offer it. It could mean a really good discount come sale time.
My favorite fabric store (Fanny's) had a 1/2 price sale on *everything* for members only on Boxing Day (Dec. 26th for you Americans), too bad I didn't have any money. My mother-in-law picked up some fabric for some bridesmaid dresses she is making, she saved $90!
Anyway, it is really easy to make prefolds. The only thing I would do differently today is make them thicker. I only made mine 2-3-2. I should have doubled them or actually sewn in the insert to make them 2-5-2, but I didn't know better and I make the inserts separately, so I have to add them on top of the diaper.
