I also use this recipe and I love it! I do the same thing - buy used clothes at garage sales/thrift stores for about a quarter each (and I can get really nice stuff), and then I get the stains out with this recipe.

It's worked with almost everything!

For really bad stains, and when I really care about the clothing and want to save it, I'll do the stain treatment, hang the garment in the sun all day to dry, and then do the strain treatment again.

I always do it exactly as the recipe says:
• 1 cup Clorox II,
• 1 cup Cascade dish-washing detergent,
• 5 gallons of the hottest water to come out of your sink,
• then soak overnight and wash as usual
- only I cut it back to about 3 gallons and adjust the detergents accordingly.

Five gallons is a *BIG* bucket!

I wait until I have a whole bunch of things to soak and do them all at once.

I always figured it was important to use the actual name brand stuff (Cascade and Clorox II) since the recipe came from the Tightwad Gazette.

It seems like the author would have tried it with the cheaper no-brand detergents! But maybe not.

Thanks to Kimberly for this Frugal Baby Tip!

  1. I've used this recipe for years on my kids clothes - it even gets out baby formula!!!!

And yes - I did use the off brand of Cascade like Target/Walmart brand - and it worked fine.
I've also been using Purex II as a sub since it is a lot cheaper then Clorox II - and it has worked as well!

    Best of luck!
